BULLETIN ISSUE 19

This bulletin is an update on the Commission for Africa established by Tony Blair in February 2004.

Consultation Document - “Action for a strong and prosperous Africa”

A compilation of ideas and proposals for African development discussed by the Commissioners meeting during October 2004.  This is not a draft report, but rather a document that identifies some key priorities, questions, and recommendations for action.  Readers are asked to consider if the Commission has the right focus, how ideas should be developed and taken forward, and what needs to be added.

Consultation Program Meetings

Each region of Africa was represented at a series of meetings over December 2004.  Over 500 people from 49 different countries participated in 5 events, including online consultations which generated over 500 responses.  Results stressed the need for a problem-solution approach and for the Commission to work within the African Union and New Partnership for Africa’s Development framework.  See event summaries, below:

Online eConsultation Report - Reactions to “Action for a strong and prosperous Africa”

From 15 November to 17 December 2004, 203 participants from the United Kingdom and twenty one African countries were asked to respond to issues raised in the Consultation Document released in October.  Online discussions evolved around central themes: financing for development and opportunities for economic growth; human development, culture and participation; and governance, peace and security.

The Commission for Africa will issue a full report in Spring 2005, including recommendations to the G8, the European Union, and other wealthy nations. For more information, please visit: www.commissionforafrica.org.
