US Relations with the Islamic World — Activity Summary

Sponsored by IRIS and the University of Maryland, this May 14th event was supported by USAID via the PPC IDEAS project and attended by more than 60 people, including 12 from USAID.

The event focused on identifying specific ways that US interests and support for more stable and prosperous societies can be matched with those of groups in countries in the Islamic World.

Speakers included Dr Imad Ahmad, Lecturer in the Undergraduate Studies-Honors Program at the University of Maryland; Ms Letitia Butler, Director, Policy Office, PPC, USAID; Charles Cadwell, Director, IRIS; Dr I. M. (Mac) Destler, scholar at the University of Maryland; Ambassador (Retired) Husain Haqqani, Visiting Scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; Thomas E. Johnson, Jr., Democracy Advisor, PPC, USAID; Ambassador (Retired) Ahmad Tariq Karim, Senior Advisor, IRIS; Dr Jillian Schwedler, Assistant Professor of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland; and Dr Peter Warren Singer, John M. Olin Fellow, Foreign Policy Studies Program, The Brookings Institution.
