Georgia Rule of Law Resource Center

USAID’s Georgia Rule of Law project operated from June 30, 2001, through December 30, 2005. Implemented by the IRIS Center at the University of Maryland, College Park, the project was designed to strengthen the rule of law in Georgia. Our activities included:

  • Writing new laws and making the old laws more effective

  • Providing legal assistance to protect citizens’ rights

  • Helping government offices be more open and responsive to people's needs

  • Informing Georgians about the law and their rights under it

IRIS worked with the government and legal system, as well as with individuals, citizen groups, and NGOs. Local engagement, capacity-building, and participation were key to the success of this project — IRIS worked closely with Georgian NGOs, awarding and managing grants to implement specific sub-projects.
